the craziest week in the life of a missionary in korea

Soooo, I have been having a rough time getting started into the mission like any missionary does when they first start. I am really gaining so much respect for every RM who has made it through this. It seems like I have a long 16 almost 15 months ahead of me....But this past week it got ridiculously crazy! Ready for this?

So this past week we spent two days at the hospital and then a night at the ER. Don't worry, I'm okay!! But my trainer, Sister Kim, has had some sickness issues so we have had to be very cautious of her. To spare you details, let's just say that I have spent a few hours on the bathroom floor holding my companion's hair and then twice I've had to physically carry her in my arms. After a few comical visits with the doctors, we ended up at the ER with two elders to help, because we don't speak the language, and Sister Kim (our translator!) after throwing up had lost consciousness and was not staying with us very well.

Well that night after President Gilbert drove us home around midnight, Sister Kim told us she had to call her mom and two seconds later said she actually had to go home. WHAT?! But then the next morning she told us she wasn't leaving, so we went out and did our appointments and were looking for people to talk to on the street.

We went back home for lunch, and the president called us. Long story short, Sister Kim did have to go home and she was supposed to be packing. So we had one hour to get our act together and get her packed before President was showing up to drive her home. What did they do with Sister Yokum and I you ask? Well someone in heaven has a funny sense of humor or is bored because they decided to leave the two of us together...alone. In Korea. It was just supposed to be until today, but we haven't heard from President, and we are still just roaming around Korea alone. We stood out enough with a Korean "escort," but now that it is just the two of us, and we don't speak the language, we get the weirdest looks and then even weirder looks when we start speaking horrible Korean to them. But it's Korean, nonetheless!

So yes, I have spent the last few days getting lost, literally! All around Korea with cute Sister Yokum who is very directionally challenged. But we have gotten two contacts and taught a 10 minute lesson to members. We've also literally gotten lost once and had to call the office elders to bail us out. They just laughed at us the whole time.

Needless to say, this stuff doesn't happen to people! Especially not in their first two weeks!! Oh man! We don't know how to do this! I have never shed so many tears or had so many panic attacks, or been so angry at everyone and everything, ever laughed so hard, or ever had such confidence in my ability to serve a mission and that it will be the hardest thing of my life as I have these past few days. I can't wait until we are a few days down the road and I can just laugh at this all.

Sister Bryson, an office couple missionary, said "Someone wants to see how badly you really want to be a missionary!" It is true! I have never known so much weakness or strength was possible for me to have. I am just waiting for the blessing part to kick in :) haha Sometimes I just lay on the floor and think to myself, "This is a joke," and than I have to laugh.

Also the cherry on top of this awesome Sunday? I lost my camera!  I lost it while we were in the middle of the whole Sister Kim sickness so it wasn't priority. But now that I am not taking care of her I am focused more on the fact that I have lost it and it kills me!!! I am still determined to find it but the elders aren't giving me much hope. But I am so grateful for the support system we have out here, particularly with the elders. They are always there for love and support. Lets pray I find my camera. I pray for that constantly. {Editor's note: this is why there haven't been photos.}

Pray for us over here, and pray for Korea. They have the blind leading the blind. Anytime you want a good laugh just think of how comical my life is right now :) hahaha love you all so much!

korean gangster + that awkward moment when...

Hey! So white washing two areas is insane. One area is crazy, let alone two! Also, Korea's address system makes no sense so it can be quite comical around here.

We went to FHE last week at a member's home. They have ten kids, which is unheard of in Korea. I loved it so much! We sang Love is Spoken here in Korean, and the spirit was so amazing. I felt right at home. They have three kids out on missions right now. And one who just had to come home for health reasons but should hopefully get back out. He was serving in the Salt Lake City South mission. So if that is our mission you Salt Lakers need to find him and feed him if he gets back out.

Also, no worries I am teaching my native companion how to speak gangster :) hahaha Aka just Whit talk. The APs are really hoping I teach her how to talk gangster because according to them I am her only hope of learning it. :)

Also, last night the office couple had us over for dinner and they cooked us a good American meal! Pasta and garlic bread full of carbs and cheese. I was the happiest girl around! I literally ate until I could not move! I felt so sick!! Also, I can see why Koreans are so skinny. Their food is so much lighter!

.....................

You get lost in Korea with a Korean, and she looks at you and asks where you are.

You spell participate wrong in English class...

Your English student starts talking about a "sex book." Bless his heart. I just hope he doesn't understand what he was saying....

You make a comment about being glad you don't have to eat the food you are serving at service and that ends up being your lunch.... :S

Your companion reads a text about President Monson's wife passing away and yells to you that President Monson had died because she read it wrong, so you run out from the shower with only your towel on.

You are horrible with chopsticks so every member and restaurant brings you a fork. I have refused to use one yet though. Survival of the fittest man!

alive in korea!

Well, I am in Korea!! I am currently at the mission office filling out a bunch of paper work. The flight was good. It actually wasn't too bad because I was able to sit next to the really chill missionaries so we talked the whole time. :) It was actually pretty fun. And I am here and safe.

I'm super excited and also going out of my mind. This is so right and where I am supposed to be, but it's cray cray!! Hahaha. It's gonna be the best adventure ever. This is the time I have given to the Lord and I am here because I love Him, and I know He loves me more than I can imagine as He does with all of us. This mission is for Him and I will press forward strong for Him.

This is our trio. Sister Kim in the middle is not
only our companion and trainer, but also our interpreter! :)
My other companion (American) is Sister Yokum.

Gangham style!

A picture of the city.

My first Sunday we had dinner at a member's house and one of the things she served
was a whole fish! I was trying to be very polite and follow their culture.
But when I was eating the fish I got some scales in my mouth.
I didn't want to be rude and stick my fingers in my mouth so I grinned
and swallowed the bones! So gross! I was ready to gag!
Turns out you are fine to stick your fingers in your mouth.
But let's just say I didn't eat anymore fish after that....

week eight :: MTC

It is so crazy that this is my last week at the MTC. I have only like 2 1/2 more days. So crazy!! We had in field orientation for eight hours yesterday, which is kinda surreal and also a really long day. We also got to practice street contacting last night with the native Korean missionaries. It was so much fun! We didn't understand everything, but I got to share my testimony, and they said that our eye contact was good and that when we looked them in the eyes they could feel the spirit. It was a really cool experience! :)

Also we taught our last "progressing investigator" on Wednesday, and when Sister Hilton and I had finished, the teacher stopped us and asked us to come back in real quick. He complimented us on how good our Korean was and how we always brought the spirit and worked really well together. He told us that we did a really good job and truly understood what we were supposed to be doing. It was a really nice compliment to get. :) Also, our other teacher jokes that we must've been missionary companions in heaven because we are perfect for each other. It will be sad to be separating soon.

Everyone has started getting sick.
This is what $30 of drugs looks like!
I am NOT getting sick!
Me and Sister Scott.
Yes, I know we are beautiful. :)

Me, Sister Sloan from my district, and Elder Rendfro from
another Korean district. He is going to Seoul.

Me, Elder Sorensen, and Elder Willhelm (Elder Willhelm is going to Argentina
and is my companion's friend so we have ended up becoming friends. He is a giant!
I cut him out of the first picture on accident...)
This is when we were hosting new missionaries. Yes, we work really hard! :) haha

We also study really hard. :)
